Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Provide advanced nursing care to critically ill neonates, including those requiring ventilation, specialized feeding, and close monitoring.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments, ensuring accurate dosage and timing.
- Monitor vital signs, identify changes in condition, and respond promptly to emergencies.
- Deliver individualized care plans tailored to the unique needs of each neonate.
Family Support:
- Educate and support families regarding their newborn’s condition, care plan, and progress.
- Provide emotional support to parents during challenging times and foster a family-centered care approach.
- Facilitate parent involvement in the care and bonding process.
Collaboration and Teamwork:
- Work closely with neonatologists, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans.
- Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure seamless patient care.
- Participate in regular team meetings and case reviews to enhance care strategies.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records in compliance with hospital policies and legal requirements.
- Ensure proper inventory management of NICU supplies and equipment.
- Participate in quality assurance initiatives and audits to uphold high standards of care.
Professional Development:
- Stay updated on advancements in neonatal care through ongoing training and professional development.
- Mentor and support junior nursing staff and students within the NICU.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Nursing Qualification: Diploma or Degree in General Nursing.
- Postgraduate Specialization: Post-basic qualification in Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a NICU environment, preferably within a private hospital setting.
- Professional Registration: Active registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse.
- Certification: BLS (Basic Life Support) is mandatory; NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification is highly advantageous.
